Xarelto’s most dangerous side effect is uncontrollable internal bleeding. Bleeding cause by Xarelto can be fatal.
Patients took Xarelto and suffered uncontrollable internal bleeding have filed lawsuits against the drug makers Bayer and Johnson and Johnson. These patients claim the drug’s manufacturers knew about the risks associated with Xarelto and did not share them with doctors or the general public.
Patients are prescribed Xarelto to reduce the risk of blood clots. Xarelto was marketed as an easier alternative to established drugs like Warfarin. Unlike Warfarin, Xarelto does not require regular blood testing to determine dosage.
Risk of bleeding is associated with all blood thinning drugs, but Xarelto is considered more dangerous because it does not have an antidote to stop uncontrolled bleeding once it has begun. Warfarin, the drug Xarelto was created to replace, can be controlled by using vitamin K in emergency situations.
Bayer and Johnson and Johnson began marketing the drug in 2011. and by 2013 Bayer had made 1.3 billion in sales from the drug. Sale are expected to remain in the billions annually. Patients have filed lawsuits claiming the manufatcturers have profited greatly by misleading the public about the danger of Xarelto.
How is Bleeding Caused by Xarelto?
Xarelto is designed to stop blood from clotting, so even minor injuries can quickly become serious. Xarelto works by targeting and blocking specific proteins in the blood stream that normally cause the clotting process to begin.
The drugs effects can last as long as 24 hours. Anti-clotting effects last longer in older patients because they have a more difficult time flushing the drug from their system. This puts older patients at greater risks for fatal bleeding even from very minor injuries.
Because there is no way to stop the drugs effects immediately, doctors are left with few options to help patients and the consequences can be fatal. Doctors are beginning to grow concerned about using the drug because of the dangerous side effects.
Xarelto cause many types of bleeding including but not limited to:
- Rectal Bleeding
- Abdominal Bleeding
- Intestinal Bleeding
- Brain Hemorrhaging
Patients on Xarelto must stop using the drug 24 hours before any surgical procedure to avoid potential complications. Pregnant women are increasingly likely to suffer hemorrhaging while taking Xarelto, and compared to Warfarin Xarelto causes more general abdominal bleeding.

The Black Box Warning

- Patients at greater risk from using Xarelto:
- Patients using epidural catheters
- Patients using other drugs such as NSAIDs or platelet inhibitors
- Patients that have a history of spinal trauma
- Patients that have a history of spinal surgery
Xarelto Internal Bleeding Lawsuits
Patients that take Xarelto often end up in the hosptial because the side effects of the drug are irreversible. Trips to the emergency room for care can be costly both emotionally and financially, and if the bleeding event ends in death the emotional toll can be devastating.
The first Xarelto lawsuits were filed in 2014. Virginia Stuntebeck suffered severe internal bleeding caused by Xarelto and filed a lawsuit against Bayer in Philadephia.
Stuntebeck alleges that Bayer and Johnson & Johnson did not properly warn doctors or the public about the risks associated with taking Xarelto and the drug should have never been sold.
The complaint said,“As the manufacturers and distributors of Xarelto, defendants knew or should have known that Xarelto use was associated with irreversible bleeds.”
Bayer maintains that the Xarelto is safe. A similar drug Pradaxa, manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim, has been linked to irreversible bleeding and the manufacture has paid $650 million to settle thousands of cases.
