What is Yaz?
Yaz is an oral contraceptive that was also approved in 2006 to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder, a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). The drug, manufactured by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, was also advertised as a treatment for PMS, although it was not approved for such use, and has caused serious complications including stroke, heart attack, deep-vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and even death.
From the early 2000s until 2016, more than 12,000 women had filed Yaz lawsuits alleging that the drug caused serious complications, including death. However, since 2013, the FDA has received almost 11,000 reports of serious complications from manufacturers and health professionals, who report solely on a voluntary basis. Since health care professionals are not required to report each instance of serious complications, there are undoubtedly a countless number of unreported cases. Among those reported cases were more than 6,000 women who were hospitalized and over 200 deaths.
In 2015, Bayer Pharmaceuticals paid $57 million to settle a multidistrict litigation for Yaz lawsuits filed in four states. Only two years prior, the pharmaceutical giant shelled out $1.4 billion to settle claims that the drug caused serious blood clot-related injuries. Since the company has yet to admit any wrongdoing in the settlements, the door remains open to women who may have been seriously injured after taking Yaz.
Take Legal Action
Although Yaz lawsuits and settlements have been ongoing for a few years, complaints continue to file in as more and more women who were prescribed Yaz experience serious complications such as stroke, heart attack, liver cancer and gallbladder disease, among others. If you or a loved one have experienced any of these complications after taking the birth control pill Yaz, you may be entitled to compensation for your pain and suffering.
